Artist Biography


Born in Tartanya/Adelaide and based in Naarm/Melbourne, JC Harris is an abstract artist and designer whose practice investigates how his mixed-race heritage and sexuality form his identity. Influenced by the legacy of his great-uncle, landscape artist Anton David Riebe, he draws upon lived experience to produce abstracted portraiture using a process of layering, mark-making and high-key colour.

Harris has exhibited across Meanjin/Brisbane and Naarm/Melbourne, Including his solo exhibition, Become Whatever, at Rubicon ARI (2024), and group shows at Jacky Winter Gallery and the Counihan Gallery. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Diploma of Visual Arts from the Southbank Institute of Technology, and maintains an active studio practice at J Studios in Fitzroy North.
