Born in Tartanya/Adelaide, JC's early life also included time in K’gari/Hervey Bay and Meanjin/Brisbane before settling in Naarm/Melbourne. He is a multidisciplinary creative of mixed Filipino, German, and Australian heritage and is the great nephew of South Australian landscape artist Anton David Riebe, whose influence inspired his career in visual arts.
JC completed his vocational training at the Southbank Institute of Technology (now TAFE Queensland) and holds a BFA from the Victorian College of the Arts.
