Biography and Statement
Hi, I’m JC, a multidisciplinary abstract artist based in the inner north of Naarm/Melbourne. I’ve had a winding path to get here, moving from my birthplace in Tartanya/Adelaide to K’gari/Hervey Bay and Meanjin/Brisbane before finally settling here. I’m the great nephew of prolific South Australian landscape artist Anton David Riebe. Hearing tales of his life and experiencing his artworks in our family home inspired me to become a professional artist.
I pour my energy into abstract drawings and paintings, using bold colour and an intuitive action-based process to create what I call 'emotional projections'. These projections are rooted in my mixed heritage, sexuality, and observations of how we build our identities.
I'm formally trained, holding a BFA from the Victorian College of the Arts and having studied at the Southbank Institute of Technology (now TAFE Queensland)
My work has been featured in solo and group shows in both Meanjin/Brisbane and Naarm/Melbourne, and I’ve had a highlight feature in the 2025 Spring issues of British Vogue.
I currently work out of my studio in Fitzroy North (part of the J Studios Artists Community) and I always welcome private viewing appointments—feel free to reach out!
